“Why live, only to repeat the same mistakes again and again?” (Walter, Act Two)
New York, 1968. Two long-estranged brothers meet to dispose of their late parents’ possessions. But, as they haggle over the best price, old tensions rise to the surface. While one brother left to pursue a successful career, the other stayed behind to look after their father during the Great Depression. Each is now paying the price for those decisions, as a disillusioned wife looks on and a valuer - one of Miller’s most memorable characters - tries to strike a deal. Revelations, rivalries, and family secrets are uncovered in what one critic described as: “a tightly wound, electrically-charged time bomb”.
The Price, focusing on the financial and emotional costs of chasing the American dream of material wealth at the expense of family values, shares themes with Miller’s earlier masterpieces, such as Death of a Salesman. At its premiere, the New York Times hailed The Price as: “one of the most engrossing and entertaining plays Miller has ever written”.
The Price is directed by Bob Constantine with talented company members Brian Fisher, Kay Francksen, Jeff Hughes and John Matthews as the four protagonists.
