Lily is an unexceptional girl, she and her best friend Mon are not part of the “in-crowd”, they have kept out of trouble at school, passed their exams and are preparing for sixth form. Then Lily astounds her friend: she is going to audition for the lead role of Lady Macbeth in the school’s forthcoming production of Macbeth.
Everyone thinks Lily has lost her mind - her mother, brother, teacher and boyfriend are at pains to tell her that she has no talent, or aptitude, compared with all the other likely contenders for the role. Ridiculed by the in-crowd and increasingly frustrated by the misconceptions the world seems to have of her, Lily finds the day of the audition racing towards her.
In Living with Lady Macbeth Rob John weaves an absorbing plot line about bullies and bullied alike. Set both in Lily's imagination, where some of her darkest dreams come true, and in the real world, the play explores, with an equal blend of comedy, drama and pathos, the emergence of a person changed by her own actions and able to stand tall and confident after years of living in the shadows.
