“I see just how the pieces in the puzzle fall into place. The distrust, the jealousy.”
(Guillaume Act 2)
In Democracy, Michael Frayn creates a drama of extraordinary urgency and subtlety. The play tells the story of Willy Brandt, charismatic Chancellor of West Germany and Guillaume, the East German spy who became his closest colleague. Sharing confidences, the two men discover common ground; the dangers of living a secret life and, disastrously, the attractions of adultery. Beset by his own weaknesses, Brandt struggles to implement controversial policies that will change Europe for ever. But all the time his most ardent supporter, the ever-faithful Gunter, is betraying him.
In Democracy Michael Frayn uses his consummate skill as a playwright to engage audiences in a fascinating political game of cat-and-mouse. The intrigues, jealousies, betrayals and dangers that beset Brandt’s Government are vividly brought to life by a kaleidoscopic cast of senior politicians, skilfully depicted by leading Next Stage actors.
Following the company’s celebrated production of Michael Frayn’s Noises Off in 2014 Next Stage is delighted to now have the chance to bring Democracy to Bath audiences. Don’t miss this award-winning play by one of Britain’s greatest living playwrights, intimately and creatively staged at The Mission Theatre under the direction of John Matthews.
Democracy provides a fascinating insight into a critical period in the recent past as well as a study of the strengths and weaknesses of human nature.
Don’t miss it!
