The Glass Menagerie is one of Tennessee Williams’ most popular and acclaimed plays. He wrote the piece as a ‘memory play’, with the action and events occurring in the memory of protagonist, Tom Wingfield. By so doing Williams was attempting to break the established theatrical norms of the time and in this he succeeded. When first staged in 1944 The Glass Menagerie was an instant success and opened the door for new styles of writing and acting.

The story is set in 1937 in the Wingfield’s apartment in a shabby tenement building in St Louis, Missouri. Laura, Tom’s sister, crippled by polio as a child and finding solace in the fragile ornaments in her “glass menagerie”, lives here with Amanda her over-bearing mother. Laura whiles away her time at home, but her mother is obsessed with finding her a husband and urges Tom to bring home a suitable beau. Eventually Jim - a “gentleman caller” - comes to visit Laura and for a moment she is transported from her claustrophobic world of glass, into one where she can glimpse happiness and the chance of escape.

Next Stage Theatre Company has an enviable reputation for its interpretations of the works of Tennessee Williams. In this, the company’s 25th birthday year, it is with great pleasure that four of the company’s talented actors will be bringing this play to Bath audiences: Alison Paine, Hayley Fitton-Cook, Richard Matthews and Giles de Rivaz, play Amanda, Laura, Tom and Jim. The Glass Menagerie will be produced in-the-round and directed by Claire Rumball, who, 20 years ago, played Laura when Next Stage first staged this classic play.
