Abandonment by Kate Atkinson

The acting from the company was faultless
— Abby Sparrow, Bath Chronicle

Elizabeth moves into her new home and sees more than she really wants to of her family and friends, who are by turns amusing and downright tragic. The new occupier disturbs the spirit of a previous inhabitant, a young Victorian governess. Through her story and that of Elizabeth herself, we come to see the many meanings of “abandonment”: passion, infidelity, secrecy, desertion, and the search for a sense of belonging.

Kate Atkinson (winner of the Whitbread Book of the Year 1995) is well known as one of Britain’s leading novelists. In this, her only full-length play, she continues to examine the collision of the past and the present and the changing place of women.

Expertly mixes contemporary angst and Victorian Gothic….She has arrived at the theatrical customs with a great amount to declare.” (Michael Billington, The Guardian)

Written with enormous compassion and humour, the award-winning Next Stage Theatre Company presents the play in Bath for the first time. Anyone interested in modern fiction and drama will not want to miss it.
