This production was performed at The Wroughton Theatre, Bath

Les Liaisons Dangereuses, adapted from the French novel by Laclos, is a passionate story of love, lust and betrayal amongst the French aristocracy in the 1780's. However, the emotions aroused and explored by the play are universal and timeless - people's need for love and commitment and the all too frequent exploitation of that need.

The play charts the seduction of both the young, voluptuous and willing Cécile and the demure yet passionate Mme de Tourvel by Le Vicomte de Valmont. Valmont begins the play as an unworthy, cynical pleasure-seeker, proud of his reputation as a seducer. He is encouraged by his former mistress, La Marquise de Merteuil, who would seem to share his cynicism, but who has an ulterior motive. As Cécile and Tourvel fall victim to Valmont's charms, he himself is falling prey to the duplicitous Merteuil and the scene is set for the play's gripping and tragic climax.

Les Liaisons Dangereuses was a triumphant hit in Stratford and London in the 1980's with Alan Rickman and Lindsay Duncan providing an explosive partnership as Le Vicomte de Valmont and La Marquise de Merteuil. Next Stage has established a reputation as a company which specialises in innovative and memorable interpretations of modern drama. Dazzling costumes, sparkling and witty dialogue, period music and award-winning acting make this an unmissable show.
