The Royal Hunt of the Sun by Peter Shaffer

Bath+poster.jpg

This production was performed at Kingswood Theatre, Bath

It is not surprising that The Royal Hunt of The Sun is infrequently performed. The play demands epic treatment with its huge set pieces; the climbing of the Andes, the arrivial in Cajamarca of the exotic Inca court, the great gold processions, the final trial and execution of Atahuallpa; yet this is also a play about two men - Pizarro, the Spanish conquistador and Atahuallpa, the Inca god. The intensity and intimacy of their developing relationship demands acting of the highest calibre.

Next Stage is proud to be adding this epic of 20th Century theatre to its impressive list of productions. Several of the actors who appears in the company's memorable Shaffer play Equus are delighted to be working on another great play by the same author. Dave Dunn (Dysart in Equus) is Old Martin, whilst Luke Hardy (Pizarro) first appeared in the original National Theatre production with Robert Stephens. Darian Nelson takes on Stephens' role of Atahuallpa in Next Stage's production.

The Royal Hunt of the Sun promises to be a memorable theatrical experience, with an original musical score, authentic instruments, stunning costumes, many created especially for the show, and a company of over 50. This production will see Next Stage at the height of its theatrical powers. Whether you see the play at Kingswood Theatre in Bath, or in the unforgettable setting of the Minack open-air theatre on the cliffs at Porthcurno, you will experience a magical evening.
