Talking Heads by Alan Bennett

talking heads poster.JPG

Part of Alan Bennett’s series of popular series of monologues, the two plays Soldiering On and Her Big Chance were performed as a part of a Supper Theatre in the Theatre Upstairs at The Mission Theatre.

Marion Wood performed Soldiering On , a dramatic monologue about the life of the strong and organised lady Muriel, after the death of her husband. She deals with the grief sensibly and with great sense and composure, but after handing over responsibility of her finances to her son Giles, Muriel eventually finds herself penniless and alone.

Caroline Groom performed the role of Lesley in Her Big Chance, the fifth monologue in the series. Lesley is an aspiring actress, who, after a series of unpromising extra roles on television programmes such as Crossroads, is offered what she believes to be her big break as the adventurous Travis in a new film for the West German market. It is not clear to what extent Lesley understands that she is appearing in a soft pornographic film.
