George is happily married to Honor, a poet who has given up her career to support his as a journalist and interviewer and their daughter, Sophie is currently at University.
Young journalist Claudia arrives to interview George for a book. She is soon in love with his intellect whilst he reciprocates the emotion but with more basic motives.
This devastates his wife and daughter. “Who do I look after now ?” asks Honor, bearing no grudge for her lost opportunities.
But of course, the situation continues to change as winners become losers and vice versa.
Performed in the round, the play is a series of scenes with just a varying couple on stage as the action moves from office to kitchen, bedroom and garden, linked with superbly evocative piano between sets.
John Matthews, Alison Paine, Yvonne Paulley and Liz Wilson are pitch perfect as husband, wife, daughter and journalist respectively, whilst Ann Garner’s direction drives the piece along to maximum effect.
It’s very human tale and we’ve probably all seen something similar in real life, but probably without such great dialogue.
Well worth a trip down to The Mission, even in this awful weather.
