And did those feet in ancient time,
Walk upon England’s mountains green….

Jez Butterworth’s award-winning smash hit arrives in Bath for the first time following sell-out runs at London’s Royal Court Theatre, on Broadway and in the West End.

It’s St George’s Day, the morning of the local county fair: Johnny “Rooster” Byron, local waster and modern-day Pied Piper, is a wanted man embattled in the Wessex woodland. Facing eviction from his dilapidated mobile home, plying his friends with drink and drugs, ducking and weaving to avoid outraged neighbours, Rooster has little time to enjoy the annual pageant.

Jez Butterworth’s comic, contemporary vision of life in “England’s green and pleasant land” is compelling theatre. Jerusalem gives voice to the dispossessed and the disaffected in the person of Rooster Byron - a shockingly familiar, modern-day Everyman, played in this production by Next Stage leading actor Tim Evans.

Jerusalem is one of Next Stage’s most ambitious productions yet and will, once again, confirm the company in the vanguard of the movers and shakers in Bath’s theatre world.

“Jerusalem triggers goosebumps” Entertainment Weekly

“Unarguably one of the best dramas of the twenty first century” Guardian

Review/s of Jerusalem:

Review 1: Preview: Venue magazine

“Audiences, actors, directors: everyone will feel jaw-dropping shock at the audacity of the man, and of the playwright who has had the desire and vision to create him. Rooster appears to be an amoral, foul-spoken drunkard with a casual attitude to sex and drugs. However, as the play unfolds, most people see behind the brazen facade to a man who has his own moral code, a sense of justice and a care…click here to read the whole review.

Review 2: Review: Bath Chronicle

This play was a smash hit in both London and New York and astonishingly it has come to Bath within a couple of weeks of finishing its run in the West End. Critics raved about the play and theatregoers queued all night for a chance of return tickets for the final performance. Perhaps they won't go quite that far in Bath but such is the buzz surrounding Jerusalem that most tickets for its five-night…click here to read the whole review.

Review 3: Review: Plays International

Bath's Mission Theatre celebrated the 7th birthday of resident group Next Stage Company with the opening night of Jerusalem - a startling coup since its multi-starred West End production closed only last week, with queues throughout the night for the final performances. Jez Butterworth's play is about society's relationship to outsiders, national psyche, authority, change, love, loss, and basically…click here to read the whole review.
