The Railway Children

By E.Nesbit, adapted by Dave Simpson

Synopsis:

A father in prison, a grieving mother, their three young children uprooted from London and living far away in a small village in straightened circumstances - surely this is the subject matter of a gloomy story? But no, The Railway Children is a joyous exploration of love, loyalty, young optimism, fun and friendship set in the bucolic countryside of Edwardian Britain.

E.Nesbit’s delightful story has captured the hearts of generations of young - and old - readers, now come along and see for yourself why this children’s classic is a must-see. Given the very special Next Stage treatment the play is performed by talented members of Next Stage’s adult and youth theatre companies and features Caroline Groom as Mother, Richard Matthews as Perks and Lily Stiles as Roberta.

We anticipate this will be a sell-out show, don’t leave it too late to book your tickets!

Review/s of The Railway Children:

Review 1: never a false note

Considering her own life; seven months pregnant when she married in 1880 at the age of 22, then having two more children and adopting another two - fathered by her husband with two different women - plus being a committed Marxist and founder of the Fabian society. Her life reads like an adventure story whereas this is an extremely moral tale where middle class meets working class and no good deed goes…click here to read the whole review.

Review 2: Engrossing production

What a gorgeous, clever, engrossing production, congratulations! The story and adaptation were brilliantly constructed, and there were consistently and convincingly true performances from everyone, adults and children - not a weak link in the cast. click here to read the whole review.

Review 3: Captivated by the energetic performances and stylish staging

I was captivated by the energetic performances and stylish staging. The cast is uniformly strong, with superb performances from all the children alongside excellent characterisations of the adults. The costumes were terrific, and the lighting and sound was accomplished. I was immersed in the bucolic setting. click here to read the whole review.
