Daisy Pulls It Off

By Denise Deegan

Synopsis:

It's 1927 and Daisy Meredith, a poor but bright child, has won a scholarship to Grangewood School for Girls. It's a dream come true for an elementary school pupil, but can it live up to her expectations?

Daisy is welcomed into the fourth year by madcap and poet Trixie Martin, excels at academic work, hockey and singing and is, of course, honourable and straight in all things. But she also encounters snobbery and deceit in the rich, conceited Sybil and school toady, Monica. This pair lie, cheat and conspire to get her expelled.

Talented youngsters from the incredibly popular Next Stage Youth perform this gloriously witty parody about life in a "gel's boarding school".

Review/s of Daisy Pulls It Off:

Review 1: Preview: Venue Magazine

Ace Bath Youth troupe Next Stage Youth stage Denise Deegan's tongue-in-cheek jolly-hockey-sticks drama, in which the heroine Daisy, a barely-educated East-End girl, mixes it with the posh gels at Grangewood School for Girls. Daisy tries her utmost to be a perfect schoolgirl and prove to doubting staff and fellow pupils that she belongs at Grangewood. Welcomed into the fourth year by madcap and poet…click here to read the whole review.

Review 2: Next Stage Youth are in a class of their own

More than 50 youngsters from in and around Bath will be putting on their gym slips and picking up their jolly hocky sticks to take part in an astonishing theatrical feat at the city's Mission Theatre. Since the hugely successful production of His Dark Materials by members of Next Stage Youth a couple of years ago, the young people's theatre has swollen from about 20 youngsters to getting on for 60.…click here to read the whole review.

Review 3: Chronicle Review

Daisy certainly pulls it off in Next Stage Youth’s ambitious production of Denise Deegan’s ripping yarn, a comedy traditionally played by adults in the role of children. Set in a posh boarding school in the 1930s, Daisy Pulls It Off is a parody of the likes of The Famous Five or Angela Brazil’s school stories. There is snobbery, larks in the dorm, a hunt for hidden treasure and a dramatic cliff…click here to read the whole review.
