Scene-stealing dog - Sammy meets creator, Jill Wilson, at Next Stage’s sell out Production

Posted: Friday 27 October, 2017

Next Stage Theatre Company and Next Stage Youth have had the pleasure this week of working on stage alongside the loveable Sammy, a border collie puppet, who is a favourite amongst audiences who have been to watch the company’s sell-out performances of Goodnight Mister Tom.

Sammy has been on loan from The Minack Theatre in Cornwall, following that theatre company’s own successful run of the show last Easter. When Next Stage’s Artistic Director Ann Ellison went down to The Minack for a planning visit prior to the company’s July tour of Birdsong, she was delighted to be offered puppets and props from the April show to use in her production this month in Bath. From the outset Sammy was the “star” of the show and summer rehearsals were much enlivened as Lily Stiles - Sammy’s “handler” started to get to know her dog, whilst all the cast and crew became very fond of him!

On Thursday 26th October, the talented creator behind Sammy, Jill Wilson, came to The Mission Theatre to see him in action. Jill travelled all the way from Surrey to see the production and was extremely pleased she had made the 100 mile journey. Despite having to travel back home after the show, Jill lingered long enough to meet and congratulate Lily and other members of the cast, and, of course, to be fleetingly reunited with Sammy - see photo.

Thrilled with the show, Jill was delighted she had made the trip and added her praise to the comments the production has received from its three reviewers and enthusiastic audiences. If you would like to read any of these reviews for Goodnight Mister Tom click here.
Next Stage Theatre Company wishes to extend heartfelt thanks to Zoe and the Minack team for letting us borrow their props and puppets and wants everyone in Porthcurno to know that Sammy is happy and well and is off on tour next week to live with another company before finally getting back home to Zoe.
