This year, Next Stage Youth entered 8 groups for the Mid-Somerset Drama Festival which took place in Bath over 10th-12th March.
In the 12 and Under category, we entered three groups, two performing extracts from Daisy Pulls It Off by Denise Deegan and one from Sparkleshark by Philip Ridley. All the youngsters delivered sparkling performances and, with only one mark between each entry, achieved 3rd, 4th and 5th positions and were Commended by the adjudicator.
In the 15 and Under class another 3 groups participated, this time with two extracts from Sparkleshark and one from Daisy Pulls It Off. In a class of very high calibre performances we were delighted when two of our entries achieved first and second positions receiving Distinctions from the adjudicator.
Finally in the Under 21 class we had 2 entries and again achieved first and second places this time with Outstanding.
The NSY company presented all their work at a Showcase on March 14th in front of parents and friends and were awarded certificates, adjudicators’ comments and cups! Company photographer Alan Casse took the pictures at this event. Alan is one of a number of youth tutors who work with the youngsters every Sunday and it was Alan’s group that won the 15 and Under Class. Well done Alan! Congratulations also go to Mark Sanders whose 21 and Under group achieved 91 marks and the cup for their performance in Daisy Pulls It Off. Finally a special mention to Yvonne Paulley and her 15 and Under group who achieved second place in their class and were invited to appear in the prestigious Drama Concert at the Festival on Saturday 13th March.
Having spent 10 weeks exploring the excellent plays by Philip Ridley and Denise Deegan, the Next Stage Youth Theatre Company are now going to start rehearsals on Sparkleshark and Daisy Pulls It Off with full-scale productions planned later in the summer.
Grateful thanks go to all our talented youngsters for their hard work and to our team of tutors: Andrew Ellison, Mark Sanders, Richard Matthews, Yvonne Paulley, Alan Casse, Georgi Bassil, Hayley Fitton and Naomi Wilcox, without whom none of the exciting work and achievements of this vibrant Youth Theatre would be possible.
