Perhaps computers and modern living make this rural tale a little outdated, but Toad, Ratty, Mole, Badger and the creatures of the Wild Wood can still charm and, of course, are still the recognisable characters that we all know in the real world.
Next Stage Youth, with a necessarily huge cast, bring the tale adapted by Alan Bennett to life, assisted by great costumes, terrific props – boat, caravan and train – super sound effects, particularly for the numerous crashes, and a cinematic backdrop for the various settings. And don't forget the pianist.
Just as the devil has the best tunes, the devils here, weasels, ferrets and stoats have the best costumes, dressed as classic 1920's crooks in long coats, white scarves, black shirts and ties, and are lead by natty Chief Weasel in a sharp suit.
Natty green Toad has the best lines though: "Some people are modest and some are not, and I'm not. But why should I be? I've nothing to be modest about."
So if you want a whiff of nostalgia and a classic tale get to The Mission. It's almost a total sell-out so tickets may be tight. Even The Mayor of Bath has seen it.
